The 43th Scientific morning of the Scientific Research Institute Beverages in France (Ireb) held on Wednesday, March 12, 2014 was devoted to the relationship between alcohol consumption and aggressive or violent behaviour. Laurent Begue, professor of social psychology at the University Pierre Mendes-France, Grenoble and Director of the Maison des Sciences de l’Homme (MSH Alpes), presented a panorama of international studies conducted on the subject, as well as his own experimental research.
A presentation by Véronique Nahoum-Cluster, member of the IREB Scientific Committee, and an anthropologist and researcher at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), deepened understanding of drunkenness and alcohol use in conflict situations. Laurent Begue stated that recent studies provide a relatively consensual conclusion on the existence of a link between alcohol and aggressive behaviour, and many International studies attest to its causal effect. Begue explored how this mechanism occurs and its pathway.
