On the 17th March the European Commission published its long awaited
paper on Road Safety. This was presented in the form of a Communication
to the Council of the European Parliament and the relevant Committees
entitled "Priorities in EU Road Safety, Progress Report and Ranking
of actions." There in, the Commission has decided not to make
a new proposal for harmonisation of the BAC limit but intends
to submit a non legally binding recommendation to Member States.
The DETR position following the Commissions communication is not
yet clear, but the decision to sustain the 80mg limit for the
present is good news indeed.
