Belgian drink-drive campaign
'BOB'campaign

The Belgian Brewers Association and the Institute for Road Safety in Belgian have joined to promote a scheme named BOB, 'C'est la fete quand Bob conduit' which translates as we can party when Bob drives.

The Arnoldous Group was founded in 1992 on the initiative of the Belgian Brewers Association to promote the responsible consumption of beer and to combat the misuse of alcohol.

BOB is aimed to discourage drinking and driving and hence to improve road safety. Michel Brichet, President of the Arnoldous Group comments; The brewing industry is aware that it derives no benefit what so ever if its products are misused. We prefer customers who enjoy and drink our products in a responsible manner rather than a nucleus of consumers who in abusing drink not only damage themselves, but their families, their friends and the community'

The result of the industry's concern about drinking and road safety resulted in a partnership in 1995 between Arnoldous and the Belgian Institute of Road Safety (ISBR) and the creation of the BOB programme. BOB promotes a designated driver scheme, encouraging the driver not to drink so that he can take passengers home safely after a night out. 8,000 bars took part in the campaign in 1998, and this year 11,000 participants are expected to promote BOB (40% of all bars).

Each participating outlet receives posters and point of sale to display as well as keyrings with which to reward responsible drivers.
