A clinical review by Zakhari S et al of the National Institute
on Alcohol abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) for the Proceedings of
the Association of American Physicians reported on the benefits
of moderate alcohol consumption.
Results: The NIAAA recommended that 'Moderate alcohol consumption (1-2
drinks of 14g per day) can be beneficial in reducing the risk
of coronary artery disease (CAD)' Cellular and molecular mechanisms
underlie the favourable effects of moderation and should effect
public health issues related to alcohol advice. The researchers
cautioned that some individuals should not drink, but that those
who are at high risk of CAD including men over 45, post menopausal
women and smokers receive the greatest cardio-protective effect
from alcoholic beverages.
