French report on alcohol and the young
IREB (Institut de Recherches Scientifiques sur les Boissons) has published a second excellent paper 'Alcool et les Jeunes', following the health effects of light to moderate alcohol consumption' published earlier this year.

The report by Marie Choquet (Epidemiologist, Director of Research at INSERM) and Professor Jacques Weill concludes that the average number of drinks consumed by 13-18 year olds has remained unchanged at 20 glasses a month (1985-1996). Looking at age groups within the sample however, 13/14 year olds are drinking considerably less than in 1985 ( 3.5 glasses against 5.5) but 15/16 year olds have increased their consumption to 23 glasses a month from 13. Drinking tends to take place at weekends, in bars and night clubs. On average boys are drunk 13 times in their lives and girls 5 times.
