US Fraternity system launches programme to curb abusive drinking in universities
Officials at the US's largest fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon (Sig Ep), have announced a plan to launch a comprehensive alcohol awareness and education initiative to counsel its entire 13,000 student membership on the legal and social responsibilities associated with the consumption of alcohol. Sig Ep has partnered with Washington DC based Training Intervention Proceedures (TIPS) for the university programme to provide fraternity men with training to help them recognise alcohol abuse situations. Every Sigma chapter will be required to participate in a TIPS training workshop at least once every two years. In addition to the university programme, TIPS also provide training to assist servers and vendors in methods that help prevent alcohol abuse and drunk driving. Dr Hammond, President of Fort Hays State University said: "It has become increasingly clear that attempting to eliminate alcohol as a way to prevent abuse simply ignores the reality that alcohol will find its way into campus life one way or another.Programmes like TIPS attempt to make students more aware of the dangers of irresponsible alcohol consumption and encourage individuals and university administrators to confront the issue in a more realistic manner. Indeed, students have demonstrated they can be and are responsible" The fraternity is pursuing a constructive approach which is to be encouraged.
